Founded in 1995, the Black Mountains Botanical Garden has been created in a country area. A real natural catalogue, dedicated primarily to conifers, symbols of poor and acid soils, whose needles and cones in their many seasonal forms and colours, blend harmoniously with the carpet of heather and shrubs which surrounds the curtain of trees.
I t s p r i m a r y o b j e c t i v e s a r e : - to respect the size and ground area at the time of planting, so that, at maturity, they can develop and integrate into their country environment. - to organise the planting beds so as to reduce their maintenance and that of the immediate area. - to design landscape and varied architecture which allies the areas and seasonal colours. - to present the whole of the collection, of around 700 species, by means of informative signposting.
In the nursery, which extends to around 2 hectares, there are thirty or so types of conifer, that is around 400 cultivars, around ten varieties of heather and box hedges and selections of trees in 2/3 to 50 litre containers. Some varieties are brought on in the ground. The plants are cultivated in traditional fashion and in limited quantities of 10 to 50 units, depending on the whether the species is rare or common. This production meets the needs of a clientele ranging from individuals to landscape gardeners and nurserymen, but does not includes high volume sales. Deliveries, of all quantities, in France or Europe, starting at a purchase of 300 francs, excluding tax, is net ex nursery. The costs of packaging and transport are at the purchaser’s cost.
